How Wallpaper Affects Your Sleep (and Mood)

How Wallpaper Affects Your Sleep (and Mood)

Any design feature that covers an entire wall will impact the look and feel of a room. Wallpaper can make a drab room look classic or expand a tiny nook. In the bedroom, it has to be used with the ultimate goal in mind— sleep. At the end of the day, your mind and body have to fully relax before you can successfully enter the sleep cycle. A design scheme that uses wallpaper should make sure that it supports the body’s need for a cool, dark, quiet room. However, calm and quiet don’t need to be boring.

Color Your Retreat

The psychology of color is heavily studied in the corporate world as companies battle for the attention of their consumers. You should be willing to fight just as strongly for the colors used in your bedroom because they impact how you feel in a room in which you’ll spend one-third of your life. Reds, oranges, and other warm colors invigorate the mind and build energy in the body. Unfortunately, that's not exactly what you're looking for in the bedroom.

On the other hand, blues, greens, and cool neutrals like gray and silver reduce eye stimulation, heart rate, and blood pressure. Wallpapers in these cool, neutral shades soothe the mind and body. They can be always be coupled with pops of color from accessories within the room.

Pattern for Scale and Purpose

Patterns play visual tricks on the mind. A small pattern in a small bedroom could make it feel cramped and crowded. In that instance, small busy patterns might also provide too much visual stimulation. However, in a spacious bedroom, a busy pattern might bring in the walls, so it feels less massive. It’s all about the effect you want the paper to have.

A large pattern opens the eyes and makes a space feel bigger. At the same time, stripes, simple shapes, or busy patterns in muted colors let the eyes rest and may work better for those who need to calm themselves before bed. If you can't resist a gorgeously bright wallpaper with a busy pattern, consider putting it on one wall. That will prevent overwhelm and create an interesting focal point.

Visual versus Actual Texture

Texture adds depth to a space. Wallpapers have the benefit of adding texture on a grand scale. In the bedroom, you have to think about whether you want actual texture such as in a three-dimensional design or a faux pattern that creates the appearance of texture. If the bedroom will have children or pets in it, a faux design is more practical and less expensive. However, if you’re ready to invest, a textured wallpaper brings luxury with the added depth.

Hint of Practical

Wallpaper does not work alone to create a mood. Pick one that accentuates the architecture of the room as well as the furnishings. A large canopy bed frame fit with a mattress and mattress topper may need a patterned wallpaper to balance heavy lines while a minimal bedframe may need some whimsy to add interest to the room.

Wallpaper can create a mural effect in some rooms, while in others it's meant to blend into the background. Think about how you need the wallpaper to function. What can it add? And, how can it make everything in the room look even better?

Conclusion

Wallpaper brings affects to the bedroom that can't be achieved in any other way. The right colors and patterns can also take a stressed, busy mind and prepare it for the ultimate restoration— sleep.
